With focus on transport and the future
In 2006 Vinnova assigned Lindholmen Science Park the task of creating world-leading environments for technique and infrastructure in close collaboration with the public, industry and academia. The purpose of the assignment is to support the development of environmentally friendly and safe transports. The assignment is national, which means that the project is open for the whole of "Sweden". The project was named "Test Site Sweden" — in short, TSS — a name that aptly describes what the project is about. We met with Peter Öhman, the head of Test Site Sweden to find out what TSS is currently doing and the direction in which it is heading.
Peter Öhman, Project Manager
Test Site Sweden
Peter Öhman discusses with enthusiasm and great knowledge of the fact about the various areas TSS works within.

TSS works with creating test and demonstration environments for environmental technology. The main focus is on electricity. Work is being carried out within this area to build a charging infrastructure where various electric car manufacturers will be able to test electric cars in realistic environments. Intelligent charging poles will be set up and manufacturers will be able to gather data regarding batteries and the vehicles from these. The project is being carried out in collaboration with electric companies. Electric cars will also be made available for testing by potential users and within the near future the first electric cars should arrive and will be parked outside Lindholmen´s Science Park. TSS is also involved in method development for testing of electric automobiles in Norrland in the cold climate.

Method development
Method development is another area TSS is investing in. Tangible projects are here "multi-fuel pump station" where all current fuels and some fuels of tomorrow will be assembled in one station. Ethanol, biogas, hydrogen, DME are some of the fuels that will be tested. If all fuels have individual pump stations then it becomes expensive and divided says Peter. A test cell for electric vehicles is also under development since electric vehicles require totally different test equipment than conventional vehicles. Södertälje, Haninge and Göteborg are on the list of suitable locations. The project is being conducted in collaboration with commerce and industry but the academia will receive access to the test cell for research purposes.

Safety is also an area that TSS works with. Here they work to create an open test course where various manufacturers can actively test safety systems. The ambition is to create a uniquely equipped test course that will also attract foreign manufacturers. The project is in the pipeline and the plan is that it will be located in Hällered in the municipality of Borås beside Volvo Car Corporation´s current test course. The close proximity to Volvo´s test course provides considerable advantages for collaboration of operations, which leads to improved finances. In the plans there is also a deep commitment from The Technical Research Institute of Sweden, (SP) which would operate the plant as a neutral participant. At present TSS is working to solve financing issues. The first phase is estimated to cost of SEK 300 million. AB Volvo, Volvo Car Corporation, Scania, Saab and Autoliv are participants in the project.

Vehicle simulator in Göteborg
An advanced vehicle simulator is planned for Göteborg. The simulator, which is be one of the three most advanced in the world, provides the possibility for advanced research within many areas such as safety and driver behavior. The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute or VTI will operate the simulator but it will be possible for various companies to rent it for their own trials and closed tests.

Transport efficiency important
Transport efficiency is an important area for TSS, and in this field they work to build infrastructures for communication between cars. TSS builds communication equipment in Göteborg´s traffic environment, which can be made use of by various participants´ in their development work.

"Sweden has unfortunately ended up on the backburner with respect to electric car development..."

Speaking of electric cars, Peter tells us that TSS has an active and well-developed collaboration with various electric car manufacturers, but that Sweden has unfortunately ended up on the backburner with respect to electric car development, which also includes electrical parts in hybrid vehicles. In this respect Norway is definitely the leading country with respect to electric cars, but more and more projects are being started in Sweden. Stockholm has big ambitions within the area of electric cars and the Western Götaland region should keep up with the development because now it will begin to move rapidly.

With the scope that exists within TSS, Peter tells us that TSS is aiming to be a partner in upcoming European research programs and that TSS is working to establish its brand name in Europe. The brand name should stand for unique tests and development environments for interested parties within the transport area. To present what exists and what is in the pipeline is also an important part of the work conducted by TSS, and TSS will participate in "Politician´s Week in Almedalen, Sweden in early summer of 2009. There are also plans to exhibit TSS in Brussels.

That TSS is exciting and much more than an extra lane on the E45 highway between Göteborg and Trollhättan, which, by the way, was never built is clear when Peter Öhman explains that interest from around the world is very evident. When we leave Test Site Sweden and Peter, there is a small group of people standing around and inspecting the five electric cars that are parked outside.
