This year´s requirements are stricter than the ones required to avoid road tax for five years and for government procurement of passenger cars (the Swedish Association of Green Motorists´ requirements are listed in the facts box below). Both environmental requirements and safety requirements are stringent. This year´s list contains several new models and, amongst other things, there is an electric car on the list for the first time. Several of the cars, including the electric car, are supplied by companies other than automobile companies. Three newcomers are included on the list: BMW, Audi and Skoda.

In this year´s list there are six cars powered by fossil fuel that emit less than 100 grams of CO2 per km, which can be compared with only two for the previous year. - It shows that the association has done the right thing when over the years it has gradually made its requirements more stringent. “Now we are waiting for the government to also issue more stringent requirements for the official definition of environmental vehicles", says Karin Klingenstierna, board member of the Swedish Association of Green Motorists

Car models available
The Swedish Association of Green Motorists has gone through all the car models on the market and whittled them down to a list of vehicles which fulfill the year´s requirements. In addition to meeting the environmental and safety requirements in the facts box below, to be included in the list the model must also be available for testing on 1 June and be available for delivery to customers by the end of August.

How Best Eco Car 2010 is awarded
The cars on the list for Best Eco Cars for 2010 are also candidates for the award for the Best Eco Car for 2010. The models will be available for four jury groups to test drive at the Eco Drive Arena in Gothenburg on 1 June. The cars are then tested for the following 24 hours in ordinary traffic.
The four jury groups are:
• 65+
• Families with children
• Environmental managers - appointed by the Swedish Association of Environmental Managers (NMC)
• Motoring journalists

The jury groups select and rate their three favorites from among the nominees. First place receives 10 points, the runner-up 5 points and third place receives 3 points. The points are added together and an overall winner is declared. Should two cars have the same score then the board of the Swedish Association of Green Motorists determines which one should win the award Best Eco Car 2010.

Winner 2010
The winner was presented in Gothenburg July 3rd and was just like previous year Passat TSI EcoFuel. Volkswagen Touran TSI Ecofuel took the second place followed by three cars on the third place - BMW 320 D, Saab 9.3 and Ford Focus FFV.
