Electric vehicle breakthrough in Sweden curbed by prices
Within the space of one year, there will be eight mass-produced fully electric vehicles on the Swedish market (electric hybrids not included in this figure). These cars will come not only from Norwegian, Finnish, Japanese and Swedish automakers, but also from Renault and Peugeot.
Electric vehicles are relatively expensive in comparison with their combustion engine competitors. Battery costs are high, which is why several countries are offering large subsidies to electric car buyers to get things moving on the electric vehicle market. Sweden does not offer any subsidies, which will curb development in the electric vehicle sector in the country, says Thomas Holm, President of Mitsubishi Motors in Sweden. Parent company Mitsubishi in Japan is therefore a bit guarded in the allocation of its electric Miev model to Sweden, favoring other countries with better conditions instead.
