Market shares most important to Hyundai
With trouble-free ownership as its distinguishing mark, Hyundai now sells over five million cars every year. This ranks them as the fifth largest automaker in the world - and Korea's largest. "High quality, long warranties and innovative thinking are the models we strive for," says Mark Hall, Marketing Director Europa in an interview with Automotive Sweden. "This is what will generate larger market shares."
Since its start in 1967, Hyundai has exhibited steady growth. Today, agent Hyundai Bilar AB has nearly 90 dealers and over 110 service workshops in Sweden. Globally, Hyundai is represented in nearly 200 countries by roughly 6,000 dealers. Their home fort, however, remains in Ulsan, Korea, what is now home to the world's largest integrated auto plant, with the capacity to put out 1.5 million cars per year. "Our market share on the Swedish market is now 5% and we've seen a continual increase over the past 24 months," says Hall. "For us, market share is the most important gage of our growth - not how many cars we produce. Look at Great Britain for example, where the customers are very conservative. That is a difficult market to succeed in, but if we can continue to take market shares, we know that we're on the right track."

The Geneva Motor Show was the world premiere for the new i40, a car designed and constructed at Hyundai's research and development center in Rüsselsheim, Germany. "It was also completely adapted for Europe, with drivelines, equipment and technology demanded by, and customized for, the European market," says Hall. This car is part of Hyundai's new "New Thinking - New Possibilities" concept. "Quality is of vital importance for us, and will be even in the future. That is why we are able to offer such long warranties and "no surprise" service agreements. Our "Five Year Triple Care" package, which comprises a five-year new car warranty (without mileage limits), five-year roadside assistance and five-year service assistance, is offered on all of our new cars, and we are very proud of that fact."

How do you see the future?
We have prototypes of both fuel cells and electric vehicles. We have all the technology you would expect from a major OEM. But so far, it is our belief that customers want fuel-efficient combustion engines. At 143g, we are currently under the average on our entire vehicle fleet in Europe, but our goal for 2012 is 130g and by 2020, our emissions will be down to 95g.
