New car inventory growing
Production on new cars and light trucks has risen considerably in the past year, but sales (China excepted) are not increasing at the same pace. Global production of cars and light trucks increased by 47.6% from May 2009 to May 2010, while sales only increased 22.2%.
There were faltering recession-era inventories to replenish, but there is now an imminent risk that new car inventories will see a surplus. At the same time, the utilization of capacity in automotive factories is still under 80%. According to an analysis by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), VW will overtake Toyota as the world's largest automaker by 2014.
