New focus on electrically powered vehicles
Electrical drive systems are a route toward increased energy efficiency and a vehicle fleet that is not dependent on fossil fuels.
The decision just passed by the Energy Agency´s Energy R&D Board means that Volvo Powertrain will now receive SEK 24 million to collaborate with Scania, Bombardier, Volvo Car, Saab Automobile, Elways AB, Svenska Elvägar AB, Vattenfall and the Swedish Transport Administration to evaluate methods for transferring electrical energy from roads to vehicles."Because of the limited storage capacity in today´s batteries, battery power is most suitable for vehicles with limited driving ranges. For longer transports and for vehicles that need higher levels of power, battery-driven electrical power is just not feasible, which is why this project can be an important step in increasing energy efficiency," says Ulf Jonson, Administrator for the Energy Agency.

Various systems for transferring electrical energy directly to rolling road vehicles will be evaluated in the project. The project will examine both conductive (with contact) and inductive (without contact) energy transfer from road to vehicle. To increase the benefits of an expanded system in the Swedish road network, the system must be accessible to both light and heavy vehicles.

The project has been granted support in one of FFI´s five sub-programs: Transport Efficiency, Vehicle Development, Vehicle & Traffic Safety, Energy & Environment and Sustainable Production Technology. The objectives of FFI (Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation - a partnership between the public sector and automotive industry in Sweden) are to reduce the environmental impact of road transports, decrease the number of fatalities and injuries in traffic and strengthen the competitive power of the Swedish automobile industry.
