Saab buying BMW engines
BMW will soon be delivering engines to the upcoming Saab 9-3, specifically four-cylinder, 1.6 l in-line engines. Rumor has it that BMW and Saab are also discussing partnerships in other areas. One of these areas could be diesel engines to Saab and maybe floor pans to small Saabs (9-2), which the Mini floor pan would fit.
The agreement to purchase BMW engines is a positive signal, though perhaps too many conclusions should not be drawn from this. BMW also sells engines to the French PSA group (Citroën and Peugeot). Nevertheless, Saab will obtain a modern engine with good characteristics, and will perhaps also benefit from the strong BMW brand. Saab has bought engines from other suppliers before. A V4 engine from Ford was purchased for the old Saab 96/95 from 1966-1980, and for a time, engines from Triumph were bought for the Saab 99. Saab does not currently have internal engine production, and the forced link to GM has been broken. A partnership with BMW is obviously a step along the road to profitability and success.
