The introduction of electric cars can now become reality
One of the (Swedish political) Alliance's election manifesto promises in the run-up to the parliamentary elections was the introduction of a Super Eco-Car Premium on January 1, 2012, to speed up the introduction of the most eco-friendly autos. The proposal for the Super Eco-Car Premium was originally conceived only to cover private automobiles, but after much criticism from BIL Sweden, among others, the government listened up and will now extend the premium to include companies and the public sector.
"The fact that the premium will also cover companies is good news as this will speed up the introduction of electric cars. In a few years pre-owned electric vehicles will reach the used car market, which means ordinary folks will be able to buy electric cars at very reasonable prices," says Bertil Moldén, CEO at BIL Sweden.

The Super Eco-Car Premium was launched in the Alliance's election manifesto as a way to continue the drive to a transition to a fossil-fuel free vehicle fleet by 2030. In all, the government is investing SEK 200 million in the Super Eco-Car Premium over the next three years. So far 141 electric vehicles have been registered. An electric automobile currently costs between SEK 100,000 and 200,000 more than cars in the same vehicle category with internal combustion engines. The money will cover approximately 5,000 electric cars.

"Electric cars form an important part of the transportation sector's climate problem, thus it's important for the government to have a long-term perspective when it comes to control measures for vehicles with lower climate impact whether these be super eco-car premiums, eco-car definitions, agency purchasing, reduced perquisite valuations, driving in HOV lanes, free home parking or similar," concludes Bertil Moldén.
